This beautiful vintage Russian lacquered box was hand-painted by famous  Russian artist Tikhomirov V. from the town of Mstera. The title of this box is 'Father Frost' and it is based on a very popular old Russian  fairytale "Morozko".

The poor girl was sent to the forest by her cruel stepmother. While she sits under the tree in very cold winter snowy forest, Father Frost finds her and starts a conversation with the girl. He blows at her with his frost breathing, but in spite of her suffering, the girl greets him politely and does not complain about her condition. Impressed by her stoicism and respectful demeanor that Father Frost rewards her with a fur coat, a box filled with jewels, and other fine treasures and sends her home. The stepmother became jealous of her stepdaughter and send her own daughter to the winter forest under the same tree. When Morozko approached her, she was very rude and Father Frost turned her into barking dog.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made, painted with egg tempera paint and lacquered. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a lively red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge has been fastened to the left sideof the box. The work is signed and titled ("Morozko") by the artist.

This size of this lacquered box is very impressive: 7.25" x 9.5" x 1.5" This Russian lacquer miniature is a wonderful piece to add to one's collection.
