Christ The Pantocrator translated from the Greek means The Omnipotent.
The Omnipotent is referred to as Christ The Almighty, The Master of the
universe. In the Byzantine Churches, Christ The Pantocrator, Master of
the visible and invisible universe adorned the large cupola of the
church. Christ bestows a blessing on us with his right hand while
holding the fingers in such a manner to represent the Greek letters, IC
and XC - the first and last letters of the name Jesus Christ. In the
halo one finds the Slavonic letters (W O H), which is derived from a
vision Moses had and God said to Moses, " I am that I am." Texts in the
Gospel book usually refer to the passage from John 8:12. " I am the
Light of the world, he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the....” . Sometimes the text is taken from Matt. 11:28.
“Come unto me all that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you
rest.” This depiction of Christ is often referred to as Christ The
Teacher.
This Antique Russian Icon "Christ Pantocrator" was painted in the 19th century, and the
artist used Egg tempera on wood, the icon also has a bronze riza. This Icon is from
Central Russia and the size is 12" x 14". It is a gorgeous piece and has
been preserved very well. The icon is 100% original and comes with a
certificate of authenticity.
